چکیده
We are pleased to introduce a selection of the papers presented at the ECAI’98 Workshop on Binding Environmental Sciences and Artificial Intelligence (BESAI) (Cortés & Sànchez-Marrè, 1998) [3]. The BESAI workshop has its roots in the IJCAI’95 Workshop on Artificial Intelligence and the Environment (Mason, 1995) that is, to our best knowledge, the only initiative of its kind in the framework of a big Artificial Intelligence Conference. That IJCAI workshop was organised at that time by some members of the Artificial Intelligence Research In Environmental Sciences group (AIRIES) [1] and they are still running a series of workshops. This academic interest (see [1], [3], and [7]) corresponds to growing environmental concern, industries (e.g. the ISO14001, the European standard EMAS, [2], etc) and in politics (e.g. Kyoto summit or Rio do Janeiro declaration). The survival of the human species and our quality of life depends upon our ability to manage and sustain the earth’s natural resources. Therefore new tools for solving old problems in a new and effective way are more and more welcome. As pointed out by several authors, the environment is a complex and dynamic system: different aspects can lead to the same impact (e.g. the emission of global warming gases), while other aspects might combine synergistically to create an impact which is much greater than that which would be predicted using a reductionist approach (e.g. the emission of solvents and nitrogen oxides that can react in the atmosphere to produce smog). Thus, further analysis is required to assess the

Artificial intelligence-based approaches for multi-station modelling of dissolve oxygen in river
ABSTRACT: In this study, adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system, and feed forward neural network as two artificial intelligence-based models along with conventional multiple linear regression model were used to predict the multi-station modelling of dissolve oxygen concentration at the downstream of Mathura City in India. The data used are dissolved oxygen, pH, biological oxygen demand and water...
متن کاملReasoning about river basins: WaWO+ revisited
This paper characterizes part of an interdisciplinary research effort on Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques and tools applied to Environmental Decision-Support Systems (EDSS). WaWO+ the ontology we present here, provides a set of concepts that are queried, advertised and used to support reasoning about and the management of urban water resources in complex scenarios as a River Basin. The g...
متن کاملExperimental investigation, modeling, and optimization of combined electro-(fenton/coagulation/flotation) process: design of experiments and artificial intelligence systems
In this study, a combined electro-(Fenton/coagulation/flotation) (EF/EC/El) process was studied via degradation of Disperse Orange 25 (DO25) organic dye as a case study. Influences of seven operational parameters on the dye removal efficiency (DR%) were measured: initial pH of the solution (pH0), applied voltage between the anode and cathode (V), initial ferrous ion concentration (CFe), initial...
متن کاملDesign solutions for children's play space is based on identifying environmental and non-environmental components affecting children's emotional and social intelligence.
Play space is one of the child's favorite spaces that greatly affects the child's mental state and the proper design of these environments can improve their emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is the capacity or ability to organize the feelings and emotions of oneself and others, to motivate oneself and effectively control one's emotions and use them in relationships with others. The...
